Day 19- Letting in the LIGHT of Christmas

December 23, 2012 No Comments

I was irritated by the baby that burst into my room so early waking me from some much needed rest. I was so upset I almost didn’t notice the gift God had sent me that morning. When I wiped the sleep from my eyes I looked out the window in time to see a breathtaking sunrise. Isn’t that just like Him? Sending something so beautiful so early in the morning, daring us to notice it, accept it? I wondered to myself how many times God has gifts just waiting to give me and I never see them because I am too wrapped up in ME!

Light is such a magnificent thing and I love all of it. This Christmas I am committed to Letting In the Light of Christmas. I don’t want it to pass me by, I want to savor every moment of it. I want to celebrate it and fill my home, not just with light but with HIS light.

When the spirit of Christmas is planted deep within our hearts  we remember Him whose birth we are celebrating.  “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

Here are a few of things I’ve been doing to accomplish this…

CANDLES- All throughout the Christmas season I light candles at the dinner table, I read Christmas Bedtime stories by candlelight and we go out Christmas caroling using candles. This year I decided to buy my friends and neighbors Christmas Candles as part of their present, and I found a lovely scripture and poem to go with it.  Feel free to print it off for yourself or to give to your neighbors.

FIRE: I try to light a fire every night I can and curl up with the kids while we read stories together.

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS: I remember being a little girl and sneaking out of my room at night to look at all those lights on the Christmas tree. They were so beautiful and sparkly, everything a little girl could dream of. I like to cover my tree in lights and during the Christmas season as often as I can I let the kids sleep under the  Christmas tree. They love it!

CHRISTMAS EVE LIGHTS: Every Christmas Eve I gather my little ones around in a circle and we turn out the lights. Pappa gives everyone their own candle which is unlit, carefully guarding his own candle which is already glowing with fire.

One by one we get to say our favorite thing about the year and then we light our neighbors candle and they do the same. As we go around the circle we are brought from darkness into the light. We get to join together and celebrate each others happiness, we are united under the light. The candle lighting ceremony brings a sweet spirit into our celebrations. We then end with a prayer, thanking God for all the wonderful memories of the past year.

There is no greater symbolism for Jesus Christ than light- may your Christmas Season be filled with His light.

How do you let His light enter your hearts at Christmastime? I’d love to know 🙂
